AI starts doing the science: fusion, physics, enzymes
In one day, AI extended a fusion result, reportedly aced 49 of 50 unpublished physics problems, designed working enzymes from scratch, and stretched weather forecasts to six weeks.
What they showed / shipped
- DeepMind says Gemini 4 Argon is already producing results in quantum computing, nuclear fusion and protein design (x/@GoogleDeepMind).
- Fusion: scientists overturned a 59-year-old belief about the magnetic fields that hold plasma; Google gave the result to Gemini 4 agents, which found new solutions beyond the original paper within hours, as posted (r/singularity).
- Physics: GPT-6 Astra reportedly solved 49 of 50 unpublished theoretical physics problems (98%) at under $3 each, and several answers first marked wrong turned out to be errors in the physicists' own work (r/singularity).
- Enzymes: David Baker's lab used RFdiffusion2 and ProteinMPNN to design new protein-cutting enzymes; the best speed up the reaction 10^9 to 10^10 times and cut proteins tied to Alzheimer's and dementia in cells (two Nature papers) (Ars).
- Weather: Microsoft's open-source Probabilistic Bias Correction runs on CPUs and improved ECMWF forecasts 2 to 6 weeks out on 98% of precipitation and 92% of temperature targets (The Verge).
- Home tier: one user's autonomous Claude agents found 104 new eclipsing binary stars and a new way to find them on a home PC, as posted (r/singularity). QuEra now has AI locking and tuning its quantum computer lasers (QuEra).
Why it matters
- The pattern is the same everywhere. Give an agent a fresh result plus a way to check it, and let it push further. That loop works on your own data too.

Agents are now half of EU business AI use
OpenAI says more than half of its EU business customers' AI use now runs through agents and small-business users grew 8x, while a16z lays out how agents get priced on outcomes instead of seats.
What they showed / shipped
- OpenAI Economic Research: over half of AI use among EU enterprise and business customers involves agents; small business users up 8x across the region (x/@OpenAI).
- Perplexity: over 50% of users paying for Automations (recurring agent tasks) or higher tiers are American, with high net dollar retention (x/@AravSrinivas).
- a16z ladder: assistant owns a task, agent owns an interaction, then an agent owns an outcome and gets paid per closed loan or settled case (x/@a16z, x/@a16z).
- a16z on how to sell them: license the platform, or sell the outcome itself (x/@a16z).
- Hiring shifts too: McKinsey now makes applicants spar with a fake AI client (The Verge).
Why it matters
- If agents own the outcome, pricing moves from per seat to per result. That changes what a solo builder can charge.

- ASML's strong orders and above-forecast Q4 guidance eased fears the AI spending boom is fading (Reuters).
- Counterweight: JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, SMBC and MUFG are exploring risk transfers on AI loans; $38B of construction debt on an Oracle-leased project has sat unsold for 6+ months, and Oracle's 5-year CDS hit about 151bp, highest since 2009 (Startup Fortune).
- 📌 On the radar: Anthropic's Q3 revenue reportedly jumped to $16.8B and it claims to be profitable (FT); 404 Media says Character.AI's bankruptcy filings show chatbot economics did not work (404 Media).
Why it matters
- If a used GPU holds its value, buying beats renting for steady workloads. Price compute like an asset, not a cost.

- Mirelo's new SFX model adds realistic, scene-grounded sound to AI video while keeping the speech intact (x/@venturetwins).
- YouTube Music now tags tracks Fully Gen AI, Partly Gen AI or No Gen AI, shown in the player and the main YouTube app; AI use alone does not block monetization (TechCrunch, The Verge).
- Deezer will ship a toggle before year end that hides AI tracks from search; AI was over 50% of daily uploads in July, about 90,000 tracks a day (TechCrunch).
- Voice in retail: Square's new kiosk lets customers talk to AI to order (The Verge).
Why it matters
- Sub-second voice is the bar for agents in cars, kiosks and phones now. Test latency before features.

Atlas gets its own factory floor
Boston Dynamics shows the in-house shop that builds Atlas humanoids at speed, and NVIDIA's AlphaNIST gets robots to learn assembly from simple pass/fail rewards.
What they showed / shipped
- Boston Dynamics: Atlas parts are machined in-house, with assembly and repair under one roof, to hit the manufacturing velocity humanoids need at scale (x/@BostonDynamics).
- NVIDIA AlphaNIST: emergent assembly skills learned from binary task rewards, no hand-tuned reward shaping (r/singularity).
Why it matters
- Pass/fail rewards mean you describe the goal, not every step. That is how robot training gets cheaper.

Did an AI agent erase a whole TV season?
Swedish press blamed an AI agent for wiping an edited season of The Challenge; TV4 says a backup failed, and security experts say most 'rogue agent' stories are basic containment failures.
What they showed / shipped
- Aftonbladet reported an agent erased a fully edited season, 'hundreds of days of work' (hn). TV4 denies an agent did it, blames a failed backup, and moved the premiere from Nov 22 to late spring (Sweden Herald).
- CSO: experts at SANS, RAND and BIML say the recent lab 'rogue agent' hacks were containment and monitoring failures; the fixes are decades old: sandboxes, egress control, someone watching the run (CSO).
- Small version of the same lesson: a dev deleted 168,000 lines of comments and the agent did not notice (openstation).
Why it matters
- Before giving an agent delete rights, give it backups, egress limits and a log someone reads.
