Gemini 4 Carbon takes #1, but only cyber defenders get it
Google DeepMind announced Gemini 4 Carbon two weeks after Argon. It tops the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5.0 at 59 and leads the cyber benchmarks, but access starts with a small set of cyber defenders while Google tunes guardrails.
What they showed / shipped
- #1 on Artificial Analysis v5.0 (59), ahead of Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra per The Verge. SEC-bench Pro 88.2% (finding bugs), ExploitGym 54.8% (exploiting them), CWE-bench 71.0% (patching) (Google blog).
- Built for long-horizon agent work: Google says internal teams saw it run for days on multi-step engineering tasks. WebDev Arena +89 elo to #4 (1768).
- Rollout is gated: a subset of cyber defenders this week, then trusted partners via the Fairwind Program, with US government pre-release testing. Price when it opens: same as Argon, $2 in / $10 out per million tokens (x/@GoogleDeepMind).
- Context: a16z cites a Bain estimate that AI compresses a typical cyberattack from about four weeks to about 18 hours, and Wiz's CTO is warning of a 'vulnpocalypse' for aging code (x/@a16z).
Why it matters
- Second frontier lab in a month to hold back its best model on cyber grounds. 'Strongest model you can't use' is now a pattern, not a one-off.
- Creator: the angle is the gate, not the benchmark table. Who gets the strongest AI first, and why it's defenders.

Microsoft made $10B from OpenAI in one quarter
Microsoft's filing shows $10B in revenue from OpenAI arrangements last quarter, nearly 11% of its $92.3B total. Azure got its first dollar figure, $33.2B, and Anthropic is shipping reports so companies can see what their token spend buys.
What they showed / shipped
- $10B from OpenAI in the quarter ended Sep 30, up from $24.1B for the whole prior fiscal year. At that pace it's about $40B a year. OpenAI also owes Microsoft $7.2B in receivables (TechCrunch).
- Azure revenue disclosed in dollars for the first time: $33.2B. Microsoft's 10th straight record quarter (TechCrunch).
- Anthropic launched team-level reports showing what was produced, what it cost and where workflows broke, plus pooled token budgets. TechCrunch says investor financials show an operating profit in Q2 and 900% net revenue retention (TechCrunch).
- Google is taking AI Search ads global as core ad growth slows (TechCrunch).
Why it matters
- Hard numbers day. The money is real at the top, and the buyers are now asking for receipts, which is exactly what Anthropic's ROI dashboards answer.
- Good chart segment: one partner worth 11% of Microsoft's revenue.

AI in the physical world: Odyssey-3, a painting robot arm, 3D parity
Odyssey says its Odyssey-3 world model now simulates general environments in real time with better physics, a GPT-6 Astra demo had a real robot arm paint, film and edit from one chat, and Andon Labs says AI now ties humans on physical 3D understanding benchmarks.
What they showed / shipped
- Odyssey-3: real-time general environment simulation with 'far greater physical accuracy', pitched as training knowledge for robots, humanoids, cars and drones (x/@odysseyml).
- GPT-6 Astra painted on a real robot arm, then filmed and edited the result, all from one chat (r/singularity).
- Andon Labs: 'AI now ties humans on physical 3D understanding benchmarks' (r/singularity). Check the original post before quoting numbers.
- Boston Dynamics showed Stretch's vacuum gripper with individually actuated cups handling mixed boxes (x/@BostonDynamics).
Why it matters
- Follows yesterday's Genie 4: world models and embodied demos keep stacking. The one-chat robot art loop is the filmable bit.
- Verify: the Astra and Andon items come via Reddit, so open the source clips first.

Nvidia open-sources a 40-language transcriber with speaker labels
Nvidia released Nemotron 3.5 Transcribe, an open-weight model that transcribes 40 languages, translates 31, labels up to eight speakers and takes hour-long audio, plus the Granary v2 data pipeline to fine-tune it. Also on LocalLLaMA: a RISC-V CPU built inside Qwen's weights.
What they showed / shipped
- One checkpoint for transcription, diarization in 13 languages, translation and audio Q&A. Promptable in natural language. First among open-weight models on the Hugging Face Open ASR Leaderboard for English (Hugging Face).
- Model card: NVIDIA-Nemotron-3.5-Transcribe-30B-A4B, a mixture-of-experts with about 4B active (r/LocalLLaMA).
- Weird one: someone built a 32-bit RISC-V CPU directly inside Qwen's model weights so it executes instructions internally (r/LocalLLaMA).
- Hardware aside: an IT vendor listed a decommissioned $60M supercomputer on eBay, 9,600 A100s and 4,200 EPYC CPUs (r/LocalLLaMA).
Why it matters
- Creator: free, local, speaker-labeled transcripts and translations for podcasts and interviews. Real download path today.
- The CPU-in-weights hack is a great 'wait, what' segment.

Best AI tax agent passes 10.8% of real assignments
Surge AI's DAYJOB: Tax benchmark gives agents 50 real tax-practice assignments across 1,789 files. The leader, Claude Sonnet 5.5, passes just 10.8% at a 95% rubric bar.
What they showed / shipped
- Leaderboard: Claude Sonnet 5.5 10.8%, Claude Fable 5.1 9.6%, Claude Opus 5.5 9.2% (pass@1, 95% of criteria) (Surge AI).
- 50 environments over eight practice areas, with returns, K-1s, workpapers and emails. Median 30 files per task, up to 123.
- Example: a condo-sale question where Astra got the dates right but never flagged the August 2027 deadline that could cost a $250,000 exclusion. Opus caught it in all five tries.
Why it matters
- Teachable number for non-coders: AI can do the math, but missing the question the client didn't ask is where it fails.
- Counterweight to 'agents replace professionals' hype on the same day as a frontier launch.

Akai opens its MPC to vibe-coded synths
Akai is seeding early MPC Sample Key units to modders, with open-source firmware and an SDK coming. Its clips already show vibe-coded synths, some built by Claude, and even a full custom OS on the device.
What they showed / shipped
- MPC Sample Key: a 37-key take on the MPC Sample with open-source firmware. Akai posted Reels of community mods adding Massive-style, virtual analog and FM synths (The Verge).
- The regular MPC Sample is shown running vibe-coded synths built by Claude too. inMusic's CEO told The Verge they'll seed devices to developers and open-source some software.
- Same day, a16z's venturetwins on an AI phone app that fixes any photo's angle, light or background automatically (x/@venturetwins).
Why it matters
- Creator: a hardware brand inviting AI-built mods instead of fighting them. Contrast with the game publishers sending DMCA notices below.
- Musicians who can't code can now ship a synth for their own gear.

AI backlash: a religious opt-out and buyouts not to sue
A Kentucky man became the first humanist granted a religious exemption from using AI, xAI is reportedly offering to buy hundreds of Mississippi homes if owners skip a data center lawsuit, and Instagram's Adam Mosseri says negativity around AI is going to get worse.
What they showed / shipped
- Kentucky humanist granted a religious exemption from AI, reported as a first (Religion News Service).
- xAI subsidiary MZX reportedly plans to buy 418 homes near its Southaven data center, conditional on not joining a lawsuit. Renters say they're getting 60 days' notice (The Verge). Texas voters broadly dislike data centers (The Verge).
- Games: Kotaku says Microsoft and Epic are sending DMCA notices at AI-powered recomps while promoting AI in their own dev work, and Valve responded to developers fearing AI slop and clones (Kotaku).
- Also: Adam Mosseri expects AI negativity to grow (The Verge). Anthropic's Daniela Amodei called AI girlfriends 'a terrible use of AI'. Ars says Google AI gets cagey on who won the 2020 election.
Why it matters
- Public-perception lane: the pushback now has legal and religious forms, not just comment threads.
- Pairs well with today's money story: record revenue at the top, buyouts on the ground.
